Today's Top Games
Rampart at Pine Creek
Volleyball: These two solid Class 5A teams will meet in a key Colorado Springs Metro League battle. Pine Creek is sporting a 13-3 overall record and Rampart is 12-4. Both teams are unbeaten in league. The Eagles at home will find a way to get it done. Our pick: Pine Creek 3, Rampart 2.
Friday's Top Games
Pueblo East at Pueblo South
Football: This game isn’t a conference game since East is in 3A and South is in 4A. However, this rivalry game is for the Cannon. South is 3-3 and East is 3-3. This is the 51st meeting between the teams. South leads the series 34-15-1. The Colts and Eagles have played for the Cannon 33 times, with South winning 24 of those games, including 12 in a row. Why not pick an upset. Our Pick: East 24, South 21.
D’Evelyn at Conifer
Football: This game gets underway at Trailblazer Stadium at 7 p.m.
Each of these 3A Metro League powerhouses is 5-1 and each has suffered a loss to Valor Christian. D'Evelyn quarterback Caleb Flack has filled in nicely as a first-year starter and his brother, senior Josiah, is still a terror at middle linebacker. Led by quarterback Stephen Theiss, Conifer has put up 105 points in the last two games. It'd be a toss up until you look at scoring margin: D'Evelyn 246-29, Conifer 220-106. Our Pick: D'Evelyn 31, Conifer 19.
Pomona at Arvada West
Football: This should be a great game. Pomona is ranked No. 2 in the latest CoachesAid.com Class 5A poll with a 6-0 record and Arvada West (5-1) is No. 8. Tyler Pace paced Pomona's big win over Chatfield with 207 yards and three touchdowns and quarterback Nathan Grimes threw for 148 and ran for 128 and three scores for the Panthers. Arvada West cruised past Westminster. Our Pick: Pomona 31, Arvada West 17.
Wray at Yuma
Football: This is a key game in the Class 1A ranks. Yuma is No. 2 in the latest Class 1A CoachesAid.com poll with a 6-0 record, while Wray is in the No. 6 spot. Sometimes figuring what 1A teams will do is difficult, but the home team gets the edge in this one. Our Pick: Yuma 41, Wray 21.
Olathe at Aspen
Football: Olathe is sporting a 6-0 record and is ranked No. 1 in the latest Class 2A CoachesAid.com poll. Aspen is 5-1 and ranked No. 10, thanks to crushing Grand Valley 54-13 last week. This should be a good game, but defending state champion Olathe is just a better team. Olathe is riding a 20-game winning streak and that will not end against Aspen. Our Pick: Olathe 44, Aspen 24.
Saturday's Top Games
Legacy vs. Westminster
Softball: This game pits No. 1-seeded Legacy vs. No. 32 Westminster in a first-round battle at 10 a.m. at the Class 5A Region 1 site at the Barnes Complex in Loveland. Legacy should win this game easily, but it’s an important game as the Lightning begins defense of its state championship. Our Pick: Legacy 12, Westminster 0.
Wheat Ridge vs. Cheyenne Mountain
Softball: Wheat Ridge and Cheyenne Mountain meet in a first round-game at the Class 4A Region 1 tourney at Aurora Sports Park. Wheat Ridge (16-1) is ranked No. 1 in the 32-team regional field and is the defending state champion. The Indians (10-9) received an at-large bid. A Wheat Ridge win could set the stage for an intriguing game with No. 15 seed Pueblo East. Our Pick: Wheat Ridge 10, Cheyenne Mountain 0.
Pueblo West vs. Fort Lupton
Softball: West and Fort Lupton lock up in a Class 4A first-round Region 5 game at Aurora Sports Park. Both teams are sporting identical 12-7 records. Fort Lupton beat West 2-1 last month at the Erie tournament in Boulder. The Cyclones, led by pitcher Reggie Gaide, will get revenge. Our Pick: Pueblo West 3, Fort Lupton 2.
Tuesday's Top Games
Pueblo South at Pueblo West
Volleyball: West and South will lock up in a huge South-Central match at 6:30 p.m. at the PWHS gym. The Cyclones are leading the S-CL, heading into Thursday’s games, with a 10-1 record. South is 9-2 and has already lost to West. If the Cyclones win this match, they will win the league. Megan Tapia will lead the Colts to an upset victory. Our Pick: Pueblo South 3, Pueblo West 2.
