PUEBLO -  Repeating history would be just fine for Sam Pisciotta.

The Pueblo West High School boys tennis coach would love to see his team capture the Class 4A Region 7 tourney again this weekend.

Prep regional tennis is set for this weekend.

"We feel like we have strong players at the No. 1 through No. 3 singles slots," Pisciotta said. "If they do their jobs and and our No. 1 doubles team keeps playing well, and we get points from our other doubles teams, I think we can win regionals."

Lars Hillebrand, Zach Garbiso and Chad Robertson are playing in West's singles spots. Jared Bravo and Daniel Hawk (No. 1 doubles), Neil Ericson and Logan Gamble (No. 2 doubles), Jacob Kurz and Colin Casias (No. 3 doubles), and David Henderson and Patrick Suzuki (No. 4 doubles) round out the Cyclones' squad.

A year ago, West won its first regional tennis crown - boys or girls - in school history, by edging Central 62-58.

"Central has a very tough team and there are definitely some other teams who are playing well," Pisciotta said. "This is going to be a very close tournament."

The Wildcats won regional crowns at No. 2 singles and No. 2 through No. 4 doubles last year, but came up short against West.

Central was trying to capture the regional crown despite not having their No. 1 doubles team of Taron Montee and Brent Hockaday. The seniors were suspended for disciplinary reasons.

Veteran Central coach Guy Cruz isn't living in the past, however.

"Last year, I thought, was going to be our best chance to win regionals, but we have a better team this year," Cruz said. "This is the most complete team that I've ever had. We're truly a team where everybody is pulling for each other. My goal is to qualify our entire team for state."

Central has Steven Starcer (No. 1 singles), Jake Gonzalez (No. 2 singles) and Josh Gonzalez (No. 3 singles) in singles, while Kyle Kochenberger and Nate Richards (No. 1 doubles), Kody May and Dustin Montee (No. 2 doubles), Ryan Trujillo and Duncan Richards (No. 3 doubles), and Ryan Martinez and Kevin Trujillo (No. 4 doubles) provide plenty of roar for the Wildcats.

"We're just going to go out there and play the ball and not worry about who we're playing against," Cruz said. "Whoever plays the ball the best is going to win."
