Today's Top Games
Pine Creek at Liberty
Soccer: Heavyweight battle at 6 p.m. Thursday between 5A Metro powers and neighboring schools that share District 20 Stadium. Liberty (7-2-1, 4-0) shares league lead with Air Academy, which beat Pine Creek (8-1-1, 4-1). Lancers are led by Andrew Barson, goalie Taylor Shepard and defenders Scott Kisling and Patrick Slogic. Eagles' offense is fueled by Zach Wiese, Zach Davis and Alex Frazier. Eric Marscheider is Pine Creek’s goalie. Our Pick: Liberty 1, Pine Creek 0.
Chatfield at Pomona
Football: Chatfield (5-0) at Pomona (5-0), 7 p.m., North Area Athletic Complex, Arvada. The lone two undefeated teams in the Big 8 Conference go head-to-head with first place on the line. The Chargers, led by University of Wyoming-bound quarterback Sam Stratton, have made it look easy at times this fall. A victory over bitter rival Columbine two weeks put Chatfield into the driver’s seat, but the Panthers represent a big hurdle. It was a year ago that Pomona had to get past Chatfield twice, the second meeting coming in the second round of the Class 5A state playoffs. The Panthers won that game 28-3, and have looked good this year behind senior quarterback Nathan Grimes and running back Tyler Pace. Pomona was nearly tripped up a week ago though by upset-minded Regis before rallying for a 28-24 victory. Our Pick: Chatfield 24, Pomona 21.
Holy Family at Faith Christian
Softball: These two strong teams meet today at Lutz Field. Holy Family has run the table in the Class 3A Metro League the past several seasons and has advanced to four consecutive state-title games. Meanwhile, Faith Christian has been close but often shrouded by the Tigers' long-casting shadow. Is this the year the Eagles finally one-up Holy Family and claim the league crown in a game in which each enter unbeaten in league play? We think so. Our Pick: Faith Christian 4, Holy Family 2.
Castle View at Lewis-Palmer
Softball: With supremacy in the 4A Colorado Springs Metro League likely at stake, Lewis-Palmer will look to remain unbeaten in league play against the upstart SaberCats (7-1 in league). A win by Castle View forges a three-way tie in the league with Widefield, which has lost to Lewis-Palmer but beaten Castle View. A win by Lewis-Palmer, which we believe will happen, all but sews up the league crown. Our Pick: Lewis-Palmer 6, Castle View 3.
Friday's Top Games
Pine Creek at Pueblo West
Football: Pine Creek at Pueblo West at 7 p.m. A battle for first place in the 4A Pikes Peak Conference. Unbeaten Eagles (5-0, 3-0) are led by versatile senior Josh Chance, a breakaway threat from anywhere on the field, and 6-foot-4 junior quarterback Kris Kentera. Pine Creek linebackers Connor Stevens and Kenny Klein must stop Cyclones senior quarterback Hans Ask. Senior linebacker/tight end Aaron Drake keys the defense for Pueblo West (4-1, 2-0). Our Pick: Pine Creek 35, Pueblo West 12.
Pueblo County at Canon City
Football: This game gets underway at 7 p.m. at Citizens’ Stadium in Canon City. This is a huge game in regards to the Class 3A Southern League standings. Canon is sporting a 5-0 record overall and are 3-0 in league. The Tigers are ranked No. 3 in the latest CoachesAid.com poll. Pueblo County is 4-1 overall and 3-0 in league and is ranked No. 3. This should be a grind it out defensive battle that the Tigers will barely win. Our Pick: Canon City 21, Pueblo County 20.
Monarch at Ralston Valley
Football: Monarch (5-0) at Ralston Valley (3-2), 7:30 p.m., North Area Athletic Complex, Arvada. Once again, first place in the North Metro League will likely be decided when these two Class 4A heavyweights clash. The Coyotes always bring headaches to opposing defenses, and the team already owns an impressive victory over Cherry Creek earlier this season. After being eliminated by Monarch two years ago in the 4A playoffs, Ralston Valley defeated the Coyotes last fall and eventually ran the table on the league. A dangerous rushing attack, led by senior Danny Deeds, has helped Ralston Valley overcome an 0-2 start to win its past three games. Our Pick: Monarch 30, Ralston Valley 16.
Fairview at Legacy
Football: Fairview at Legacy football (7 p.m. at Five Star Stadium)
This Front Range League clash pits unbeaten Fairview (5-0) against the 4-1 Lightning, which has won three straight. Postseason seeding implications will be in the balance, as well as the chance to fight for position in the league standings. Having a quality kicker with long-range potential can make a difference in a contest like this, so the presence of Legacy's Kip Smith gives us the feeling the Lightning will eke one out. Our Pick: Legacy 27, Fairview 24
Saturday's Top Games
The Classical Academy at Colorado Springs Christian
Volleyball: The Classical Academy at Colorado Springs Christian School, Saturday, 6 p.m. -- Undefeated CSCS, the five-time defending 3A state champion, looks for a season sweep of the Titans. CSCS (14-0, 8-0 in Tri-Peaks West) has won 37 of 40 games and is led by the senior trio of 6-foot-5 Morgan Broekhuis (175 kills), setter Hannah Walker (207 assists, 31 aces, 92 digs) and 6-0 Brianne Vande Griende (106 kills, 85 digs, 27 aces ). TCA (11-3, 8-1) is led by senior setter Lauren Alejo (304 assists, 101 digs) and 6-1 sophomore Katie Reininger (101 kills, 37 blocks). Our Pick: CSCS 3, TCA 0.
Liberty at Lewis-Palmer
Softball: Liberty at Lewis-Palmer at 2 p.m. Battle of area's top teams and both have nine-game winning streaks. 5A Metro leader Liberty (11-6, 9-1) has no seniors but is powered by pitcher Tara Duran along with Amber Spencer and Emily Jennings. Rangers senior tri-captains Emily Bryant, Heather Dettrey and Michelle Mickelson get help from juniors Mariah Peterson and Kelli Henry. Our Pick: Lewis-Palmer 3, Liberty 2.
