Football Forecast: Week 9

Week 9
And you just thought we had a good run on Fall Break? Our staff somehow did it again with a season-best .845 winning percentage in Week 8. That now puts them over the magic .800 mark for the season. Riding high right now but could come back to earth in a hurry with several big games on tap this week. Here goes.
Last Week: 142-26 (.845)
Season: 964-238 (.802)

The Fab Five

Lawton at Midwest City
Our Take: (Class 6A) Winner virtually clinches the district crown with one week to play and in the process could very well settle into the role as team to beat in the 6A Division II state title chase. Midwest City has won seven straight (mostly in convincing fashion) since an opening loss to Tulsa Washington. They are yielding only 6.2 points and 132 total yards per game with one of the state's top defenses, spurred by senior Cameron Carson. Lawton meanwhile has been nearly unstoppable offensively, scoring at least 32 points every game this year. The Wolverines average over 48 points a contest and are extremely balanced with 278 yards rushing and 196 through the air per outing. Something has to give.
Our Pick: Lawton 28, Midwest City 24

Shawnee at McAlester
Our Take: (Class 5A) This one doesn't have quite the luster it looked like it might have in the preseason but it's still a vitally important contest, not just in a wild District 5A-3 race but also the state title chase. McAlester must win to stay in the district title hunt, not to mention home playoff berth contention. Since misfiring on a potential game-winning two-point conversion try in a 27-26 loss to Skiatook three weeks ago, the Buffaloes have been on a stampede. OU commit Dalton Wood and company have scored 63 points in each of its last two contests and average more than 400 yards per game. Shawnee doesn't have quite the offensive firepower of the Buffaloes but are always a threat with East Carolina commit John Jacobs at quarterback.
Our Pick: McAlester 38, Shawnee 30

Anadarko at Newcastle
Our Take: (Class 4A) Newcastle's defense has been very good, allowing less than 10 points a game, spurring the way to an 8-0 record. The Racers however haven't shown the complete dominance of Anadarko. All the Warriors have done is throw six shutouts in eight games while allowing 13 points. Yes, 13 points TOTAL. Even though Newcastle is also undefeated the Racers are going to have to keep the score as low as possible to have a chance. Easier said than done when Anadarko's offense is also averaging nearly 46 points an outing and has yet to be held under 35. Senior quarterback Brandon Pollard has thrown for 1,060 yards and hit on 68 percent of his passes but the Warriors haven't even need to pass in the second half. Will they this week?
Our Pick: Anadarko 28, Newcastle 10

Kingfisher at Heritage Hall
Our Take: (Class 3A) These teams have played for district titles and state titles in the past, so playing with the 3A-1 championship at stake is nothing new. Kingfisher has dominated the series the past two years, beating the Chargers a combined 70-6. However, this is a healthier, more experienced team - by far - than the ones the Jackets beat. Connor McGinnis is a dangerous dual-threat QB and leads the highest-scoring offense in the district. KHS counters with sack specialist Jace Sternberger, Kaden Jackson and the best scoring defense in the district. This one will be closer, but Kingfisher has the better line and the biggest difference maker in Nick Smith.
Our Pick: Kingfisher 24, Heritage Hall 19

Maysville at Alex
Our Take: (Class B) An 8-0 record at this juncture of the season really isn't that much of a surprise for Alex, which most people knew would be very good in Class B. The Longhorns haven't disappointed while outscoring their opposition by an average of 57-7. They haven't had one closer than a 38-point romp over Allen back in Week 3. On the flip side, it's unchartered territory for Maysville, which was picked ninth in District B-2 in the preseason and had won a total of five games in four seasons prior to 2014. Things have changed in a big way however with the Warriors averaging more than 54 points per outing. Outside of 28 points to Maud in Week 4, Maysville hasn't allowed more than 16 in another contest. Best offense either has seen though.
Our Pick: Alex 42, Maysville 38
