Football Forecast: Week 5

Week 5
We finally returned to normal form last week with a spectacular batting average of .827, missing only 30 of 173 games state wide. That included a perfect 16-0 mark in 6A and 16-1 in 5A. Let's see if we can keep the chains moving or get sacked from our blind-side.
Last Week: 143-30 (.827)
Season: 404-121 (.770)

The Fab Five

Midwest City at Stillwater
Our Take: (Class 6A) Midwest City has shown one of the stingiest defenses in the state through four weeks, allowing a total of 30 points. Three of those games they have allowed a touchdown or less as well as 116 yards passing and a measley 18.5 yards rushing a contest. That unit should definitely be challenged by a Stillwater offense that has scored at least 35 points in every game during a perfect 4-0 start. The Pioneers do give up some points however, which should bode well for junior Alik Sezar, who has scored eight touchdowns on the ground while averaging more than 10 yards per carry for the Bomber offense.
Our Pick: Midwest City 27, Stillwater 20

Shawnee at Skiatook
Our Take: (Class 5A) Shawnee stubbed its toe a bit in a 21-14 upset loss to Ponca City in Week 3 with QB John Jacobs, an East Carolina commit, sidelined due to injury. He returned to the lineup last week and the Wolves' offense didn't miss a beat in a 42-19 triumph over Noble. They'll face an up-and-coming challenger this week with a Skiatook club that is off to its best start in ages at 4-0 and riding high behind Class 5A's leading rusher. Senior Kyle McLaughlin has toted the ball for 755 yards and 11 scores on the ground while averaging nine yards every time he touches the ball. The Bulldogs should be able to put some points on the board but can they slow the high-flying Wolves' assault.
Our Pick: Shawnee 42, Skiatook 33

Plainview at Lone Grove
Our Take: (Class 3A) Deceptive is the best way to describe this battle of nearby rivals as neither team has a glossy unbeaten record but it still has major playoff implications. Plainview is just 1-3 but the Indians have played arguably the toughest non-district schedule in 3A with Texas power Sanger along with Clinton and Douglass. Lone Grove also has a loss to Sanger but in between has sandwiched monster offensive efforts in three wins, averaging an eye-popping 59 points. Junior Jeremy Lewis leads the entire state in rushing with 921 yards and 13 scores. Plainview is explosively offensively as well. This could likely come down to who has the ball last.
Our Pick: Plainview 34, Lone Grove 32

Laverne at Pond Creek-Hunter
Our Take: (Class B) Its a showdown of mega-powers in Class B and rematch of last year's state title tilt won by Laverne, 42-12. Top-ranked Laverne has had little trouble in its unbeaten start, putting up big point totals every week, averaging more than 57 points an outing that have included three straight mercy rule wins. Versatile senior Tanner Allen is a big reason for that. Last week against Pioneer he scored five touchdowns, including four on the ground in just four carries in which he rushed for 181 yards. Expect a much bigger challenge in a Pond Creek-Hunter squad that is 4-0 and not too shabby offensively itself with 54 points per contest. Give a slight edge to the Laverne defense in what shapes up to a shootout on paper.
Our Pick: Laverne 48, Pond Creek-Hunter 30

Cherokee at Shattuck
Our Take: (Class C) You have to go all the way back to 2011 to find the last time Cherokee lost a regular season game and the Chiefs have definitely been riding the wave since that time. This year alone the Chiefs are 4-0 while outscoring opponents an average of 48-4. Quarterback Tanner Bowman is the catalyst for a versatile Cherokee offense which has scored at least 44 points in eachh contest. Even more impressively though is only yielding 14 total points. Shattuck is expected to be their biggest test to date with an offense that has averaged a whopping 62 points per outing. That includes 74 just last week against Tyrone. The Indian offense though hasn't faced much of a speed bump yet.
Our Pick: Cherokee 36, Shattuck 30
