Week 9: Stretch Run
Although it didn't match the previous week's unbelievable showing, our prognosticators came through with another strong performance last week, selecting nearly 84 percent correctly. This week gets even more interesting with several teams fighting for their playoff lives already while others look to wrap up district titles.
Last Week: 144-28 (.837); Season: 1143-266 (.811)
The Big Ten
#1 Wynnewood at #2 Wayne
Our Take: (Class A) This one has been circled on a lot of calendars for almost a year. Ever since Wayne's 47-42 win over Wynnewood on the way to the 2011 state championship. It's much the same Wynnewood squad with a balanced offensive attack keyed by Trey Knowles, who has rushed for 914 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Savages average a Class A best 55.9 points per game. Wayne is close behind with 49.4. Wynnewood also is near the top in scoring defense, yielding only seven points per outing. Wayne allows just over 10. Even on the road we like the Savages' experience in what should be another thriller to decide the District A-5 title.
Our Pick: Wynnewood 32, Wayne 26
#1 Guthrie at #4 McGuinness
Our Take: (Class 5A) We picked top-ranked and defending champ Guthrie to fall last week and early on it looked like things were headed that way. Like the champs they are, though, Guthrie stayed in it and pulled out an overtime victory over Deer Creek. Meanwhile, McGuinness has been busy taking care of the bottom half of the district, which is extremely weak. The Irish have yet to allow a point in October, but comparing Guthrie to the previous three opponents is like apples and oranges. If Guthrie can win, it basically secures the district title. If the Irish win, it sets up a huge Week 10 matchup with Deer Creek. How much did last week's win take out of Guthrie. How much of McGuinness' senses been dulled by its recent schedule? That's why we play the games.
Our Pick: McGuinness 27, Guthrie 21
#4 Owasso at #9 Sand Springs
Our Take: (Class 6A) Sand Springs was the last of the unbeatens in Class 6A, but was promptly brought back to reality with a 59-7 loss to Union in Week 7. The Sandites bounced back nicely with last week's win against Stillwater. With a win over Owasso, the Sandites can keep alive hopes for a district crown. Meanwhile, the reality of a district crown is even closer for the Rams. Owasso can wrap up the 6A-1 title with a win, snapping a 14-year streak of district titles by Union, which Owasso beat earlier this season. After a 1-2 start, the Rams have been unstoppable. Now, with the district title so close, we think they're even better.
Our Pick: Owasso 39, Sand Springs 17
#9 Catoosa at #7 Cleveland
Our Take: (Class 4A) Both teams are virtual locks for the playoffs but this one is still pretty big with a first round home game to the winner, while in the process likely avoiding Top 10 ranked Fort Gibson. Cleveland has one of the top passing attacks in Class 4A led by Chas Stallard's 1,738 yards and 19 touchdowns. He'll get pressured by a solid Catoosa defense, spurred by Cash Nuckolls' seven quarterback sacks. The Indians have thrown the ball a bit as well with Austin Potter passing for 1,015 yards and 10 scores. It could go down to the wire.
Our Pick: Cleveland 28, Catoosa 25
#7 Stroud at #9 Okemah
Our Take: (Class 2A) Showdown for the District 2A-5 title. Stroud has ridden a stingy defense and opportunistic offense to a 7-1 record, allowing a grand total of 49 points. In their past six contests all the Tigers have done is outscore their opposition a resounding 323-29. Since an opening night 40-20 loss to Class 3A Top 10 rated Sequoyah Tahlequah, Okemah has been on a roll. The Panthers have scored at least 41 points in each of their past six contests fueled by the dynamic one-two rushing tandem of seniors Kyle Britt and Michael Davis, who have combined for 1,863 yards and 12 touchdowns. Definitely a clash of two of the hottest teams in 2A, but the Stroud defense is the difference.
Our Pick: Stroud 24, Okemah 20
#10 Tulsa Memorial at #7 Tulsa Kelley
Our Take: (Class 5A) Coming off last week's last-second stand against McAlester, Kelley can wrap up the District 5A-3 crown with another win this week against Memorial. To do that, the Comets will have to find a way to slow down Charger QB Keith Driver, who has accounted for over 2,000 total yards and 17 TDs. Driver has led the Chargers to an unbeaten mark, but business is about to pick up. Kelley is a big step up in competition and this will be the best defense the Chargers have faced. Kelley won 51-7 a year ago and has won six straight in this series. Different teams, yes, but we don't think it will change this year.
Our Pick: Tulsa Kelley 31, Tulsa Memorial 24
#3 Seminole at Cushing
Our Take: (Class 3A) The winner will wrap up the 3A-2 district title in this showdown of teams with just one combined loss. We still weren't sure what to think of Cushing going into last week, but the Tigers' 42-27 win over Perkins-Tryon was an impressive one and gave them a shot at the district crown. To do that, they'll have to figure out a way to slow down a different kind of rushing attack. Led by Trenton Newson, Seminole averages over 330 rushing yards a game. Both teams can put up some points, but we don't expect this one to be too high-scoring. We do, however, think it will be close.
Our Pick: Seminole 24, Cushing 22
#6 Claremore at Coweta
Our Take: (Class 5A) Claremore is still in the hunt for the 5A-4 title while Coweta is still trying to keep alive its playoff hopes as it's one of three teams with a 3-2 record vying for two spots. Claremore's lone hiccup this season was a narrow 20-19 loss to East Central, a defeat that told us what we already knew - Claremore is legit. Coweta's record isn't quite as pretty, but the Tigers have battled through a brutal schedule early in the season that included the likes of Wagoner, Carl Albert, Bishop Kelley and East Central. Coweta's certainly battle-tested this season. Unfortunately for the Tigers, we think Claremore's got just a little bit more.
Our Pick: Claremore 22, Coweta 20
Seq. Tahlequah at #10 Hilldale
Our Take: (Class 3A) The much awaited showdown for the District 3A-7 title took a big hit this week with the suspension of eight Sequoyah players as well as head coach Brent Scott due to OSSAA rules governing summer camps. One of those suspended was standout QB Brayden Scott, who has been the key figure in the Indian offensive attack that is averaging more than 45 points per contest. He has thrown for 1,379 yards and 26 touchdowns this year. Josh Giem fuels a stingy Hilldale defense with 102 tackles while Jamaul Cullom and Bradley Campbell have combined for 10 interceptions.
Our Pick: Hilldale 31, Seq. Tahlequah 21
#8 Garber at Ringwood
Our Take: (Class B) If you like offense, this is your stop this week. Garber is coming off one of the most impressive individual offensive efforts of the entire season a week ago in which QB Jordan Avantz as he totaled 529 yards of offense and nine touchdowns in a wild shootout with Covington-Douglas. There's definitely no time to rest for the Wolverines against a Ringwood club that has been involved in it's fair share of shootouts and is still battling for a playoff spot. Eudaldo Gomez is the ringleader for an offense which has eclipsed 42 points in all but two games all season. Better have some extra bulbs ready for the scoreboard.
Our Pick: Garber 68, Ringwood 54
