New basketball classes for several perennial powers
Enrollment numbers have been released for the upcoming school year, which will cause some shifting in classifications for basketball teams and other sports across the state.
We have broken down the numbers which will have 22 teams moving up in class while 22 others move down. Those numbers could change a bit with the OSSAA's private school ruling from a year ago but there are some interesting movers. One move that's almost certain is Mount St. Mary remaining in Class 4A despite having an enrollment that puts it in Class 3A. Mount St. Mary was pushed to 4A last season and will remain there, which will likely push Dewey down to Class 3A.
Perennial state tournament teams dropping a classification include Tulsa Central boys, Perkins-Tryon girls, Healdton girls, Cashion girls, Copan girls, Coyle boys and Earlsboro boys.
There are also a few notable moves up in class, including Piedmont, which climbs to 5A after reaching both girls and boys state tournaments a season ago. Other notable moves include Metro Christian boys, Plainview boys as well as Merritt and Hydro-Eakly to Class 2A.

- HS Sports Guru on 07/20/12 10:46 PM said:Correct on Okmulgee instead of Kellyville. Last year, any of the schools that had co-op deals moved up if their enrollment caused that but schools did not move down, so actually 2A and A ended up with more schools than Class B. Doesn't seem right but that's the way the association did it (much to some people's dismay). Yes, it should affect baseball and softball but because of the districts in the state's two largest classes none of those can change until next year. Other classes could change although there are even more co-op teams in those sports than in basketball.
