OGBCA All-State Games

WEATHERFORD - The East was dominant yet again at the OGBCA All-State games as it took two of three contests held at Weatherford High School.

In the day's first game, the Middle East needed overtime, but got the job done with a 75-71 victory. The Small East followed it up with a convincing 48-31 win over the Small West.

In nightcap, however, the Large West helped its side of the state save some face, but not without making it interesting. In the end, though, the West prevailed, 56-53.

Britney Morgan scored four points in overtime, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 52 seconds left, to lift the Middle East past the Middle West, 75-71.

The Pawnee product, who has signed with the University of Central Oklahoma, added an insurance free throw with 17 ticks left in the extra frame to help ice the game. She led all scorers in the contest with 16 points, which included a trio of 3-pointers.

Morgan had a chance to potentially win the game in regulation, but turned the ball over with five seconds left. That gave the West’s Ronay English, from Anadarko, a last-second 3-pointer, but it fell just off the mark, sending the game into overtime knotted 69-all.

The East struck quickly in overtime Paiten Taylor of Hulbert scored on a putback just after the tipoff. After it was tied back up on the West’s next possession, Morgan put her team up for good with her final bucket of the day.

The East led 31-29 at halftime and 50-47 after three quarters.

The West outsocred the East 22-19 in the fourth, paced by Washington’s Kristin Milster. The Southern Nazarene signee scored nine of her team-high 10 points in the fourth quarter. Her free throw with nine seconds left in regulation tied the game at 69-69.

Perry’s Ashlyn Briegge, Clinton’s Taylor Neidy and Weatherford’s Tiffany Harper scored seven points apiece for the West.

The East got nine points each from Hulbert’s Taylor and Taylor Collins of Heavener.

The western part of the state produced three of the four finalists in the Class A and B girls’ championship games. That didn’t translate into success at the OGBCA All-State game.

The Small East held its opponent to just 18 points over the final three quarters as it cruised to an impressive 48-31 victory in the day’s second game.

The West jumped out to a 13-10 lead after a quarter, but that’s about all that went right for the West, which featured players from Class A champ Okarche, Class A runner-up Chattanooga and Class B runner-up Cyril.

The Small East, with no representative from a state championship team, outscored the Small West 15-7 in the second quarter and didn’t look back.

The East did it with a balanced scoring attack, led by Barnsdall’s Teryn Gillett, who scored a game-high 10 points. Ripley’s Kelsey Wilson added eight points while Whitney Barnes of Indianola and Bailee Cartwright of Moss chipped in with seven points apiece.

The West got nine points from Wayne’s Taylor Posey, but no other player scored more than four points.

The Large West narrowly escaped a late collapse and helped its side of the state escape a sweep in the 2010 games as it held on to beat the Large East, 56-53, in the day’s final game.

Despite trailing by nine points with 2:30 to play, the East was able to make a game of it by using its full-court pressure to spur a comeback. Tulsa Edison’s Jennifer Johnson’s free throws with 45.6 seconds remaining pulled her team even at 49-49 and capped a 12-3 run in less than two minutes.

However, the West managed to knock down seven of eight free throws in the final 39 seconds to secure the victory.

Edmond Memorial’s Madison Johnson made the final two of those with 2.3 seconds left to give her team the 56-53 lead, then watched as Y’Cedria Devers’ trey at the buzzer just missed tying it back up.

Devers scored 10 points for the East, which was led by Coweta’s Katy Harsen’s 15. She scored eight of her points in the fourth, when the East outscored the West 22-16.

The West was led by Desiree Bradley of Carl Albert as she poured in 13. Kendra Suttles of Lawton, who knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, added 11. Bradley’s Carl Albert teammate Kylie Mayes chipped in with 10 points.
