Class 4
Borgia enters the year in a familiar place – looking down at the rest of Class 4. The 10-0 Knights, the defending Class 4 champs, began the year by waxing its first four opponents by an average margin of 35 points a game before edging out Whitfield 78-75 and knocking down free-throws at the end to preserve an 81-75 win over Class 6 #3 Chaminade and its superstar, Florida-bound Bradley Beal. Borgia is led by Nathan Scheer, who’s headed to Missouri State, and Scheer is averaging 24 ppg while knocking down 60% of his threes on 57 attempts. Borgia will have a stiff test on Wednesday when #5 Miller Career Academy stops by with its 7-3 record and balanced offensive production. 6-3 junior forward Jaronn Jones leads the team in rebounding at nearly seven boards a night while chipping in 12 points a game, good for second on the team behind Dorian Dean, a 6-2 junior guard who’s knocking down 13 a contest. Miller’s been erratic this season, starting the season 1-2 before winning six of their next seven, but will need a solid all-around performance to beat the Knights at their place. Much like Borgia, Kearney finds itself in a familiar spot as well – in second place behind the Knights. Last year’s runners-up in Class 4 are off to a great start again this year thanks to the trees inside, 6-9 senior center Dillon Starzl, who leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 14 and 9 respectively; and 6-7 senior forward Grant Cozad, who’s second on the team in scoring and rebounding at 12 and 7 per game respectively. O’Hara, sitting at #3, is back in action this Friday against Class 5 foe Rockhurst, who sits at 8-1 on the season. The Celtics, led by TJ White and Aaron Stubblefield, have already knocked off Class 5 #7 Rock Bridge in double-OT last week and are playing really good basketball right now. Clayton and Jennings continue to get better as the season progresses, while Fulton, who rounds out the top ten. Led by Verdis Lee, a 6-1 senior guard with one of the best names in the state, leads the team in scoring, 18 per, assists, 4 per, and steals, with nearly 4 a game there as well. Playing a pesky Hannibal squad Tuesday night, the Hornets then have games on the horizon against Moberly, a Class 4 Tourney team from a year ago and Helias, last year’s third place Class 3 team, in two weeks.
