Winter Park beat Gonzaga of Washington, D.C., at the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass., to highlight another impressive week for Florida teams on the national boys basketball scene.
The Wildcats (15-4) victory over a USA Today Super 25 squad vaulted them back to No. 1 in our updated Class 6A fast five.
Meanwhile at the Flyin’ to the Hoop event in Dayton, Ohio, our season-long No. 1, 3A Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest (16-2) and independent power Montverde Academy (17-4) both chalked up 2-0 records.
Pine Crest beat a pair of Ohio teams with high-flyer Brandon Knight posted two more sizzling scoring performances to surpass 3,000 career points. Knight had 39 and 36 to reaffirm his status as one of the nation’s top uncommitted senior stars.
Miami Carol City (16-4), which had climbed up to No. 1 in the AP sportswriters’ poll for 6A, slipped out of our big-school top five with three losses in four games. The Chiefs lost close to two Jacksonville teams, Lee and First Coast, on consecutive days at the Jacksonville MLK Classic, then were beaten 80-65 by district-rival Dr. Krop on Wednesday night.
Fernandina Beach’s 17-1 record proved good enough to lift the Pirates into our Fast Five for 4A. Here are the rankings:
CLASS 6A
1 – Winter Park (15-4)
Update: The Wildcats beat Washington, D.C., Gonzaga, which was in the USA Today Super 25, at the Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass., and continue to climb back up the national polls. Stellar guard Austin Rivers (6-3, Sr.) suffered an ankle injury late in that game but all signs are it was a minor sprain and should not keep him out long.
