Football kicks off with big games Friday
By Kent McDill
It’s always good to start at the top, and that’s what happened Friday night in Wheaton, where two of the top teams in the state collided.
Reilly O’Toole threw for three touchdowns and the host Wheaton-Warrenville South beat Hinsdale Central 34-26. Hinsdale quarterback John Whitelaw also threw for three touchdowns and rushed for one.
Warrenville South plays at Maine South next Friday, and the defending state champion Hawks will be coming off a 64-35 win over Schaumburg on Maine South’s renovated, newly lighted home field.
Quarterback Tyler Benz threw for two touchdowns, while running back Matt Perez had four touchdowns for the Hawks.
Joliet Catholic topped Carmel 19-16 in a battle between the two best teams in the East Suburban Conference. The game does not count as a conference game, however.
In Frankfort, Lincoln-Way East beat Providence 28-7 in a big demonstrative win for the Griffins.
In St. Charles, Geneva edged out St. Charles East 13-6.
Libertyville topped Barrington 22-21, coming back from a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter to take the win.
In Bloomington, MykeTez Forman’s field goal as time expired gave Danville a 30-28 win over Bloomington.
Illini West, coming off a 3A state championship, opened up its defense with a 69-6 win over West Prairie; Bloomington Central Catholic recorded a 28-7 win over Prairie Central following celebrations for the 4A title last year; and Wheaton St. Francis also started well after winning the 5A title in 2008 with a 35-7 win over Yorkville.
Bolingbrook edged Downers Grove South 16-14, Triad Topped Chatham-Glenwood 40-39 in a wild affair, and Thornridge edged Rich South 13-12.
In an unexpectedly lopsided result, Cary Grove made a huge statement with a 40-0 win over Crystal Lake Central.
