MONTGOMERY -- Prattville quarterback Sam Gibson threw two third-quarter touchdown passes to Earl Lucas to seal a 37-0 victory against Montgomery-Carver in the 2009 AHSAA Champions Challenge at Cramton Bowl.
Prattville, the 21st-ranked team in USA Today's Super 25 preseason poll, held Carver to just 32 total yards, while piling up 352 offensive yards.
The Lions started the scoring slowly, as Chris Kennedy connected on a 27-yard field goal with 59 seconds remaining in the first quarter. But Prattville tacked on two second-quarter touchdowns, as Desmond Haley dove in for a 2-yard score and Cory Lee plunged in from the 1 for a 17-0 halftime lead.
The two Gibson-to-Lucas scoring passes made it 31-0 after three quarters, and Mario Davis added a 5-yard touchdown run for the Lions midway through the fourth quarter.
Haley led all rushers with 83 yards on 13 carries. Gibson went 9-for-14 for 146 yards, and Lucas hauled in four passes for 108 yards.
Carver quarterback Reginald Aaron was 9-for-19 for 66 yards, and was sacked six times.
T.R. MILLER 27, LEEDS 7
Anthony Herbert, who rushed for 130 yards on 23 carries and scored two touchdowns to pace the Tigers on Saturday night.
He put T.R. Miller ahead for good with 4:19 left in the first quarter to cap a nine-play, 60-yard drive that started with just over nine minutes remaining in the first period. Corey Rilling scored the second TD on as 2-yard run with 52 seconds left in the period.
Terez Lane hauled in a 16-yard pass from Wil Riggs for the third T.R. Miller touchdown with 5:42 left in the second quarter as the Tigers of Coach Jamie Riggs built a 21-0 lead.
The Greenwave, which went 15-0 last season en route to the 3A state crown, scored with 1:18 to go in the half when Rush Perkins scored on a 2-yard run. The TD was set up by Perkins’ 22-yard pass completion to Vic Watts at the 2-yard line.
The Tigers got their final score on Herbert’s 5-yard run with 3:08 remaining in the fourth quarter. Riggs finished 9-of-12 passing for 113 yards. Lane had three catches for 83 yards.
Perkins was 7-of-17 passing for 116 yards but threw three interceptions, one each by James Matthews, Kori Jackson and Herbert. Perkins also rushed for 69 yards on 17 carries and Ladarius Rogers added 43 on six tries.
Defensively, Kendaris Abernathy had six tackles while T.R. Miller’s Jaren Jackson had 11 stops. Tiger teammates Johntae Brown and Cody Swain had eight each.
HOOVER 32, OXFORD 27
Hoover jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter on a 62-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Carter to Maudrecus Humphrey and a 10-yard run by Justin McArthur in Saturday' snightcap.
Oxford fought back in the second quarter with two touchdowns in the final three minutes of the first half to take a 14-13 lead. Bobby McCain scored on a 1-yard run, then scooped up a blocked punt 90 seconds later and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown. Kellen Roberts kicked both extra points to put the Jackets ahead at intermission.
In the third period, Hoover took the lead with 7:30 remaining on a 2-yard McArthur TD run. Twenty-two seconds later, Oxford snapped the ball over the quarterback’s head into the end zone and Leon Carlton recovered for the Bucs to put Hoover ahead 25-14. On the next Jackets possession, another bad snap resulted in Oxford losing the ball at its own 1-yard line. Three plays later, Sam Gillikin scored to put Hoover ahead 32-14.
Oxford did put a scare in the Bucs late in the fourth period. Justin Morgan hauled in a 25-yard TD pass from Jackson Stephens with 4:59 to play and with 14 seconds remaining, John Prince caught an 18-yard toss from Stephens for another touchdown. The onside kick failed, however, and Hoover held on to win.
Hoover rolled up 328 yards total offense to 267 for Oxford. Carter completed 12-of-27 passes for 214 yards and the one TD to Humphrey. McArthur rushed for 73 yards on 13 carries for the Bucs.
Stephens was 13-of-23 for 125 yards and two scores for Oxford. Jarid Moore was 8-of-11 for 108 yards. Antonio Webb caught four passes for 56 yards.
On defense, Eli Brown, Teryence Glaze and Antonio Gaylord had six tackles each for the Bucs. Trae Elston had nine stops and Demetri Orr added eight for the Jackets.
