Middletown upsets nationally-ranked Salesianum in boys' soccer semis

There will be no sixth straight boys’ soccer state championship for Salesianum.

Middletown’s Kevin Knox took care of that. His goal in the 87th minute gave the fifth-seeded Cavaliers a 1-0 win over top-seeded Salesianum (14-3-1), ranked 16th nationally, and helped advance his team into the state championship game.

Middletown (15-3) will face third-seeded Caravel for the state championship at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Appoquinimink. Caravel (15-2-1) advanced with a stunning 4-1 win over second-seeded Charter School of Wilmington (15-2-1).

The Cavaliers have proven to be one of the best stories of the fall season as their playoff run to the finals also included an upset win over fourth-seeded Seaford in the quarterfinals.

The upset also snapped Salesianum’s 22-game winning streak in the postseason. The Sallies last loss in the tournament came when St. Mark’s defeated them in the 2003 state semifinals.

(3) CARAVEL 4, (2) CHARTER SCHOOL OF WILMINGTON 1: Grayson Winstead scored two goals as the Bucs scored all of their goals in the first half to upset the Blue Hen Flight A champions to advance to the boys soccer state championship game. Bayahtah Roberts and Chandler Tulin also scored for Caravel, which will face Middleton at 7 p.m. Saturday at Appoquinimink for the title.

FIELD HOCKEY

(1) TOWER HILL 3, (4) MOUNT PLEASANT 1: Alexis Saunders scored two goals as the Hillers advanced to the state tournament championship game. Saunders and Kali DiGate each scored in the first half for Tower Hill (17-1), which led 2-0 at intermission. Danielle Gilley scored the lone goal for Mount Pleasant (15-2). Tower Hill will play Sussex Tech at 1 p.m. Saturday for the state title at Dover High School.

(3) SUSSEX TECH 1, (2) CAPE HENLOPEN 0: Abby Atkins scored on a pass from Courtenay Rickards with 3:20 left in regulations as the Ravens (16-1) upset the Vikings (16-1-1) to advance to the state championship game. With the win, Sussex Tech also avenged a 2-1 loss from the regular season. Veronica D'Amico had four saves in goal for Cape Henlopen. The Ravens will now face Tower Hill for the state title at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dover.
