One down, five (or four in Division I for 3A, 2A and A) to go.
Here's a look back at some of the individual standouts, notable games and eyebrow-raising upsets from the opening round of the 2009 UIL football playoffs.
Class 5A
Upsets
Few huge ones, although Klein over Lufkin, 27-21, knocked out a team expected to go far in Region II Division II ... In Region IV Division II, two upstarts that looked to challenge – San Antonio Reagan and Bastrop – went out in the first round. Reagan lost 10-3 to Pflugerville, which entered the game 6-4 but scored the game’s only touchdown on an 85-yard pass from Alex Dean Jr. to Drew Travis on the game’s first play from scrimmage and held on. Bastrop, meanwhile, fell to New Braunfels 41-21, the Bears' second (and final) loss after a 9-0 start.
Notable
Galena Park North Shore brought its “A” game in eliminating Pearland 24-6 in Region III Division I. The Mustangs defense intercepted four Oilers passes, and North Shore broke the game open in the second half after leading 7-0 at halftime ... Cypress Ridge led by 33, then trailed by 3, then forced overtime with a field goal, then beat Cedar Park 39-36 when Andy Wickman kicked a 20-yard field goal in the second OT and the Timberwolves' try for the tie missed.
Class 4A
Upset
Not many, so let’s go with Montgomery’s margin of victory – 22 – in its victory over Region III Division I finalist pick Del Valle. The Bears rolled up 493 yards of offense and forced three turnovers.
Notable
Carrollton Newman Smith, making its first playoff appearance since 1983, won a playoff game for the second time in program history when the Trojans outscored Sherman 56-35 in Region II Division I.
Class 3A
Upset

Edna QB/S Kam Jones
Giddings, a popular choice to win Region IV Division II, was handled easily by 5-5 Brookshire Royal, 40-21.
Notable
Edna quarterback Kam Jones accounted for eight touchdowns in the Cowboys’ 54-40 win over Luling in Region IV Division II, throwing for three and running for five. Luling’s QB, Braxton Allen, had six TD passes of his own … all in the first half.
Class 2A
Upset
Amarillo River Road, a 7-3 team that tied for second in District 1-5A, ended Muleshoe’s 25-game winning streak by rallying for two fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull out a 25-21 win over the defending 2A Division I state champs.
Notable
Cisco remained unbeaten by pulling out a 41-40 overtime thriller over highly regarded Holliday. The Lobos, who allowed 13 points in the final three minutes of regulation, set themselves up for the win when Isaac Hamilton blocked Holliday’s extra-point try in OT, and Vegas Hastings’ third TD for Cisco was followed by Trevor Honea’s PAT.
Class A
Upset
Quinlan Boles, state ranked all season, was routed by 5-5 Collinsville 56-21 in Region II Division II. The Pirates took advantage of three Hornets miscues to score three touchdowns in the first 3:19.
Notable
Ben Bolt, the Region IV Division I favorite, fell 33-32 to Yorktown. The Badgers missed what would ave been the tying extra point with four minutes left in regulation. Earlier in the fourth period, the Wildcats’ Jayden Barefield returned an intercepted 2-point conversion pass 102 yards for 2 points that tied the game at 26-all.
