OAKVILLE – UMS-Wright and Mountain Brook each took home girls and boys championships Saturday at the AHSAA state cross country meet. Other winners were American Christian, Montgomery Academy and Scottsboro girls teams plus Randolph, Spanish Fort and Hatton boys teams.
GIRLS
Class 1A-2A: American Christian Places Four In Top 10
Rachel Mills clocked 21:28.04 to finish fifth overall and the Lady Patriots placed three others in the Top 10 as American Christian ran to the state 1A-2A title. The Patriots, now winners of three state titles in a row, had 39 points in front of runner-up Athens Bible with 85.
Amy McKelvey of Shoals Christian won the individual championship with a 20:56.78 finish in the 5K race.
Class 3A: Montgomery Academy Edges T.R. Miller
T.R. Miller runners finished 1-2-3, but Montgomery Academy claimed the overall 3A championship with 39 points, two points ahead of the Tigers. It was the Eagles’ second straight crown..
T.R. Miller’s Kerisa Nelson won the individual championship with a winning 18:53.96 time. Katie Nelson was a close second at 19:32.02. Maggie Rickards was fourth at 20:02.83 to lead Montgomery Academy.
Class 4A: UMS-Wright Dominates In Win
UMS-Wright scored a meet low 20 points to win the 4A state championship. Clair Kennedy led the way with a second-place finish and 19:50.81 time. The individual winner was Rogers’ Katie Stewart with a 19:24.21 winning time which led her team second-place finish with 58 points.
Class 5A: Scottsboro Wins 9th Straight Title
The Lady Wildcats edged St. Paul’s 61-69 to win their ninth straight 5A state championship and 11th in the last 12 years. Maggie Thompson was Scottsboro’s leading finisher at third place. Rachel Roberts of John Carroll won the individual championship running 18:42.35. Margaret Harkness of St. Paul’s was second at 19:22.71 and Thompson clocked 19:32.66.
Class 6A: Mountain Brook Runs To 7th Straight Championship
Marie Demedicis clocked 10:03.59 to cross the finish line fourth and Mountain Brook compiled 32 points as the Spartans won the 6A crown for the seventh consecutive year. Bob Jones was a distant second at 107.
Carmen Carlos of McGill-Toolen took first place with a meet best 17:43.51 and Sparkman’s Katie Hustin was second at 18:47.64.
BOYS
Class 1A/2A: Hatton wins second straight championship
Hatton won the 1A-2A state title for the second straight year with a 38-75 advantage over runner-up Cold Springs. Nathan Lewis and Nick Lewis paced Cold Springs with a 1-2 finish at 16:25.57 and 16:45.67, respectively.
Blake Brackin paced Hatton with a third place finish ant 17:28.59 time in the 3.1-mile race.
Class 3A: Randolph Dominates 3A Competition Again
Randolph placed five runners in the Top 9 with Leland Collins crossing the finish line fourth at 16:56.82. Randolph scored 22 points to claim its fifth straight 3A championship. Montgomery Academy was second at 70.
Stew Shoemaker of Bayside Academy finished first overall, clocking 16:46.19.
Class 4A: UMS-Wright Takes Second Straight Title
UMS-Wright scored 26 points as Richie Huetteman finished third to lead the Bulldogs strong contingent in 4A. Lawrence County was second at 71 points and Haleyville was third at 89 with Fabian Cortez finishing first overall to pace the Lions. Ashville’s Dillon Hodge was second.
Class 5A: Spanish Fort Wins First Crown
Spanish Fort placed three runners in the top six and ran to its first-ever 5A state cross country championship with 51 points. Scottsboro was second with 59.
Lucas Sieb of Scottsboro clocked the best time (15:46.10) to finish first. Brett Hanke led Spanish Fort with a 16:10.70 time for a third-place finish.
Class 6A: Mountain Brook Joins Spartans Girls As Champs
Mountain Brook edged Hoover 48-59 to claim its second straight 6A state championship. Sophomore Layton Dorsett led the Spartans with a 15:59.07 time in winning the individual championship.
Junior Bryan Propst was a close second at 16:13.12 to lead the second-place Bucs.
