The girl golfers had it a little easier than the boy golfers in regional play this year, thanks to an improved weather outlook from Tuesday to Wednesday.
Temperatures were in the low 60s Wednesday, and winds were reduced from Tuesday’s whipping conditions.
At 15 regional sites in Class 1A and 2A, golfers competed for the right to advance to five sectionals on Tuesday before the state finals the following weekend in Carterville and Carbondale.
Defending Class 2A state champion Kris Yoo of Conant had the day’s best round with a 71 at Fox Run Golf Course in Hoffman Estates. Stephanie Miller of Stevenson matched her with a 71 at Bittersweet in Gurnee.
Other medallists from Class 2A with notable scores were Ember Schuldt of Sterling (72), Brook Kochevar of Glenbard West (72) and Cassie Rushing of Marion (73), whose team is defending its state title from 2008.
The Class 2A regional at Champaign was especially competitive, as Champaign Centennial edged Normal Community High for the regional title, 410-411. Mount Zion’s Hannah Johnston won the medalist honors won in a one-hole playoff over Katie Klosterman from Effingham.
In Class 1A, Kelly McHugh of defending state champion Effingham St. Anthony beat Hannah Luckett of Hillsboro in a playoff at Oak Terrace Golf Course in Pana.
The best individual score in Class 1A belonged to Rachel Powers of Quincy Notre Dame, who shot a 78.
