When the season began, Willis Wright and Allen Hurns figured they would be entangled in a back and forth battle for the top spot as the leading receiver in Miami-Dade County.
It hasn’t turned out that way for the two highly rated 2010 recruits. Wright, a senior at Miami Springs, ranks third with 22 catches for 567 yards and eight touchdowns. Hurns, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound senior at Carol City, tore the meniscus in his left knee in the second game of the season against Booker T. Washington and will be out for the remainder of the regular season.
Both have been upstaged by Wright’s teammate, Tommy Shuler. The 5-8, 160-pound junior leads all of South Florida with 853 yards receiving on 54 catches and 10 touchdowns through seven games.

“Tommy is the real deal,” Wright said after last week’s 59-21 postseason elimination loss to Miami Northwestern. “He’s holding it down.”
Hurns hauled in seven passes for 113 yards and one touchdown before his knee injury. But it hasn’t stopped schools from recruiting him. Hurns, a three-star recruit according to both Rivals and ESPN, will be taking trips to Pittsburgh and West Virginia the next two weeks. He still says the University of Miami is his leader.
He’s hoping to come back in time for the playoffs. Carol City (5-3, 4-0 in District 12-6A) clinched the district crown with a 34-6 win Thursday against Goleman.
“I just want to come back and help our offense,” Hurns said. “Watching our team go back to just a running game has been boring.”
Wright and the Golden Hawks won’t be going to the postseason -- Miami Central and Northwestern have already clinched the top two spots. But he would like to finish the season strong and pickup his grades. Wright, rated the 20th-best receiver in the country according to ESPN, currently has a 2.5 GPA and wants to score at least a 19 on the ACT.
“I’ve already been to Nebraska and have a trip setup for West Virginia on Nov. 7,” Wright said. “I also like Georgia, Florida State and Miami. But right now, I’m more worried about school. I know I need to get my test score and my grades up. That’s the most important thing.”
