FOOTBALL

Portland (4-2) at Windham (5-1), Friday 7 p.m.

It was hard to imagine months ago that this game would impact the Western A playoff race. But here they are, in mid-October, squaring off as two of the hottest teams in the conference. Portland, behind all-conference tailback Imadhi Zagon, has won four straight. Windham, meanwhile, already has wins over perennial powers Deering and Bonny Eagle this season.

Lawrence (6-0) at Bangor (6-0), Friday 7 p.m.

This is arguably the best game in the state this weekend. The winner will likely earn the top seed in the PTC A playoffs. Bangor senior tailback Lonnie Hackett leads the conference with 1,255 rushing yards on 134. He also has rushed for 14 touchdowns. Christian Powers of Lawrence has rushed for 917 yards and has 18 touchdowns on the season. Both are expected to be finalists for the annual Fitzpatrick Trophy, which is given to the state’s top senior. One of them will be 6-1 after Friday, however.

Falmouth (3-3) at Mountain Valley (6-0), Friday 7 p.m.

Falmouth needs a win to keep its playoff hopes alive. Mountain Valley is hoping quarterback Cam Kaubris will continue to improve as he returns from a shoulder injury suffered during the preseason.

BOYS SOCCER

Hampden (10-2-0) at Bangor (12-0-0), Tuesday 6 p.m.

Bangor allowed its first goal of the season Wednesday in a 5-1 win over Lawrence. The Rams are seeded first in Eastern A and are a strong contender to win the state title. Hampden, meanwhile, is quietly third in Heal points.

Waynflete (10-1-1) at Richmond (10-1-0), Saturday 2:30 p.m.

Richmond is ranked No. 1 in Western D while Waynflete is No. 3 in Western C.

GIRLS SOCCER

Thornton Academy (11-0-1) at Scarborough (10-1-0), Tuesday 7 p.m.

The Red Storm have outscored their opposition 18-2 in their last four games. They sit atop Western A in Heal points. Thornton Academy is No. 2.

FIELD HOCKEY

Playoffs

No. 5 Mt. Ararat (5-6-3) at No. 4 Cony (9-5-0), Saturday 1 p.m.

Cony edged Mt. Ararat 3-1 in the regular season. The winner likely gets Skowhegan in the semifinals ...

No. 5 Windham (8-4-2) at No. 4 Bonny Eagle (10-3-1), Saturday

The teams played to a 0-0 draw back in mid-September and enjoy a healthy rivalry. The winner could face top seed Scarborough in the Western A semifinals.
