Game Tracker: Ten Must-See Football Games for Week 8

By: MATT CRIST
WV Content Coordinator

BLUEFIELD at SCOTT, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Scott (4-3) started out hot at 3-0, but has since fell off, losing three of its last four games.  The Skyhawks lost, 0-14, to the top-ranked Wayne County Pioneers (6-0) last Friday. They’ll have to try harder this week, as they face a defensive and offensive powerhouse in the Bluefield  Beavers (4-2). Last week, the Beavers built a dam around the end zone, shutting out Mount Hope, 68-0. Scott and Bluefield both are in contention for a playoff spot, and they both could use a win this Friday.

CAPITAL at SPRING VALLEY, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

If we had to declare a game of the week, this might be the one. Capital’s Keion Wright has been solid in his last four games and the Cougars (4-2), who started with two straight losses, have now won four-in-a-row. One of those wins includes an 8-6 victory over last year’s state champions, South Charleston. As for the Spring Valley Timberwolves (7-0), they have the best record in the state with seven straight wins. The Timberwolves beat George Washington in their fourth game of the season in overtime thanks to their leading scorer, their field goal kicker, George Brody.

GILBERT at MAN, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

The Gilbert Lions (4-2) have been averaging 31.6 points per game, and despite losses from Iaeger and Westside, they have been dominant this season. The Lions face, perhaps, their toughest opponent of the season this weekend as they travel to Man to battle with the Hillbillies (5-1). The Hillbillies are fresh off a loss from Chapmanville, a Class AA opponent. They fell to the Tigers last weekend, 14-16, and will be looking to tame the Lions on their home field.

FAYETTEVILLE at MOUNT HOPE, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

After a disappointing, 14-28, loss at home to the Valley Greyhounds (4-2), Mount Hope’s Mustangs (4-2) square up against the Fayetteville Pirates (5-2). Earlier in the season the Mustangs upset Class A No. 3 Pendleton County, 39-20, on the road. The Pirates played tough opponents closely in their two losses at home. This should be a good match-up and one that weighs heavy on post-season bids, in a class full of one- and two-loss teams.

JAMES MONROE at GREENBRIER EAST, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

James Monroe (5-1) struggled with the offensive attack of North Cross (5-1) last weekend, but had some success moving the ball through the air and on the ground. The Mavericks hit the road this weekend to play Greenbrier East (2-5). The Spartans started out hot, with their biggest win against Woodrow Wilson early in the season. Since that game, the Spartans have lost five in a row, but their win-loss record may be a poor litmus test for assessing their strength. The Spartans have suffered through one of the hardest schedules this season. The last five teams the Spartans have faced all have winning records, with a combined win-loss ratio of 26-8.

MAGNOLIA at LINCOLN COUNTY, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

The unbeaten Magnolia Blue Eagles (6-0) move up to the big leagues to challenge Class AAA Lincoln County (2-5) tomorrow night. The Blue Eagles are coming off a big weekend win, 54-0, against Weir. The Panthers invite the Blue Eagles to their home field where they lost last weekend to South Charleston, 6-51. If it is any consolation to the Panthers, The Black Eagles have been punishing their opponents ever since they lost to Capital, 6-8.

MORGANTOWN at BROOKE, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

The last time the Brooke Bruins football team met Morgantown’s Mohigans, they were dominated on every end of the field. The Bruins lost last year’s match-up, 61-15. This year, the Bruins are the team to beat with a record of 6-0. Other than a scare with Parkersburg, the Bruins have dominated every team they have played this year. In the last two games they played, the Bruins allowed zero points by the opposing team. They also have the home field advantage. The Mohigans have really come alive late in the season too. In their last four games, they have outscored their opponents 199-32, averaging just under 50 per game. In last week’s game against North Marion, senior Mohigan Anthony Vecchio rushed for 155 yards on six carries and scored three touchdowns.

WILLIAMSTOWN at WAHAMA, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Wahama (6-0) and Williamstown (5-1) are both coming off of big wins. The White Falcons took out Wirt County in a close battle at home, 36-32. Senior running back, Micaiah Branch, rushed for 230 yards on 28 carries and scored all five Wahama touchdowns, including one on an interception. Williamstown took out the defending Class AA State champions, Grafton, on the road, 28-13. The teams will meet Friday night at Wahama’s home field in Mason, WV.

1002-allan-wasonga

Allan Wasonga rushes for his first of two touchdowns on the night in their loss to George Washington at UC stadium. The junior runingback has already accumulated 1,611 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns on the year.

PARKERSBURG at CABELL MIDLAND, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

The Big Reds will end a three-game road stretch after their game Friday, in Ona, WV where they will play Cabell Midland’s Scarlet Knights. Parkersburg has had a disappointing season thus far, losing some close battles and slipping below 500 on the year. While they lack consistency elsewhere, the one constant is that whenever Allan Wasonga is on the field, anything can happen. The junior runningback has already rushed for 1611 yards and 19 touchdowns (114 points). The Scarlet Knights are not without weapons either. Despite missing half of the season, their senior quarterback, Michael Brumfeld has passed for 523 yards and six touchdowns. He has scored 4 more touchdowns on his feet.

RAVENSWOOD at POINT PLEASANT, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

The Ravenswood Red Devils (6-0) travel to Point Pleasant (3-3) to take on the Big Blacks this weekend as part of a three road game stint. The Red Devils nearly lost to Tyler Consolidated earlier in the year, but they have sailed past their other opponents. The Big Blacks may be facing them at just the right time after coming off a huge road win over Poca last Friday. In that game, The Big Blacks rushed for 531 yards and went on to win, 54-14.
