SALVADOR HERRERA, West Salem: The 5-foot-9, 180-pound senior running back carried the ball 22 times for 258 yards and five touchdowns – both school records – as West Salem beat then-No. 3 Sprague, 61-52.

“It was so much fun just coming out competing with my teammates,” Herrera said.

The Titans needed all of his yards to hold off a second-half Sprague rally. His final touchdown, and subsequent extra point, sealed the win by giving West Salem the nine-point lead with 2:31 to play. The victory is West Salem’s fifth straight.

Southridge, Sheldon, Football

JORDAN JOHNSON, Sheldon: The senior quarterback had his most complete game of the season, throwing for 317 yards and three touchdowns on 12-of-20 passing. He also rushed for 129 yards and three scores on 16 carries as the top-ranked Irish won their Southwest Conference opener at Roseburg 42-21 to improve to 5-0.

COULTER MASTENBROEK, Scio: The senior running back was unstoppable against Blanchet, rushing for 285 yards and four touchdowns on 15 carries (19 yards per carry). Scio won 52-12. Mastenbroek’s latest effort puts him over 1,000 yards for the season. He’s gained 1,089 yards on 68 carries (16.2 yards per carry) and has scored 13 touchdowns in six games for the undefeated Loggers.

WILL TOTTEN, McKenzie: Half of the quarterback’s total completions went for touchdowns in a 94-36 win against Eddyville. Totten was 14-of-19 passing for 230 yards and seven touchdowns. He threw three touchdowns each to Jordan Wiley and Kendall Reese. It was McKenzie’s first win of the season.

Boys Soccer

JOSEPH HOUCK, Sheldon: He scored three goals in a 4-2 win against Grants Pass, which ended the Irish’s 25-game winless streak in the Southwest Conference. It was the first three goals of the season for Houck and Sheldon’s first conference win since Oct. 17, 2006, also against Grants Pass.

BEN PURTZER, Crater: The junior goalkeeper had 11 saves and scored the first goal of the game in a 3-2 victory against defending Southern Sky Conference champion Ashland. The loss was the first for Ashland in conference play.

Girls Soccer

TEGAN GRUNWALD, Philomath: The sophomore scored the first five goals of the contest for the Warriors in a 6-1 win against Santiam Christian. The win was the third straight for Philomath.

AMANDA WEILER, Marist: The goalkeeper posted her eighth shutout of the season – and fourth in a row – with a 3-0 win over Junction City. Since losing the season opener against Sheldon, the Spartans are 8-0-1.

Volleyball

RENEE BAUMANN, Weston-McEwen: Despite an injured ankle, she helped the TigerScots navigate a talented field at the Weston-McEwen Power Tournament. She was 57-of-59 serving with 15 aces and added 36 digs and 23 kills. Weston-McEwen, the top-ranked Class 2A team, beat Class 1A No. 1 Imbler 25-27, 25-21, 15-12 in the title game. The TigerScots beat Dufur and Elgin and tied Salem Academy in pool play. They then defeated Blanchet, the Class 2A No. 2 team, in the semifinals. Weston-McEwen has not lost since Sept. 12 at the Walla Walla Northwest Invitational.

GILCHRIST GRIZZLIES: The team ended Prospect’s 36-match winning streak in the Mountain Valley Conference with a 25-23, 25-19, 25-18 victory.
