It's a pretty uneventful week in the top ten as only three teams get bounced from the rankings. In fact, only four of 40 teams lost this past Friday, the highest ranking casualty being No. 7 Marvin Ridge in 3A. Take a look at our Week 8 Remix.
Class 4A
1. Charlotte Independence (8-0)
2. Butler (6-0)
3. Fayetteville Jack Britt (7-0)
4. Southeast Raleigh (8-0)
5. Mallard Creek (6-1)
6. Ragsdale (8-0)
7. Wake Forest-Rolesville (7-0)
8. Richmond Co. (6-1)
9. Harnett Central (8-0)
10. Purnell Swett (7-0)
Dropped out: No. 10 Leesville Road (7-1)
Our three week run of perfection in 4A comes to an end with No. 10 Leesville Road's 35-32 loss to Wakefield. The Pride's defeat allows 7-0 Purnell Swett to make its first appearance in the top ten. We also had some shuffling in the top five as Southeast Raleigh falls from No. 2 to No. 4. The Bulldogs were not impressive in beating East Wake 10-3 while both Butler and Jack Britt had solid weeks allowing those two school move up. No. 1 Independence had another close call in a 31-27 win over Providence. It was the Patriots third win of four points or less.
Class 3A
1. West Rowan (8-0)
2. Hibriten (6-0)
3. Hertford Co. (8-0)
4. Southern Durham (7-1)
5. C. B. Aycock (7-0)
6. Asheville (6-0-1)
7. West Craven (6-1)
8. Eastern Alamance (6-1)
9. South Point (7-1)
10. South Johnston (6-1)
Dropped out: No. 7 Marvin Ridge (6-1); No. 9 Shelby Crest (4-2)
Two straight losses bounces No. 9 Shelby Crest from the top ten, while No. 7 Marvin Ridge exits as well after just one week in the rankings. Meanwhile, South Point has won seven straight as the Red Raiders debut at No. 9. Also making its first appearance is the Trojans of South Johnston, winners of four straight. No. 1 West Rowan's shutout streak ends at two, but the Falcons win their 22nd consecutive game in crushing Carson 63-14. In fact, our top four teams won this past week by an average margin of 57-10.
Class 2A
1. Reidsville (6-0)
2. Southwest Edgecombe (7-0)
3. Tarboro (7-0)
4. East Duplin (7-0)
5. East Bladen (8-0)
6. Kinston (7-1)
7. Bandys (6-1)
8. Northwood (8-0)
9. Newton-Conover (6-1)
10. Providence Grove (7-1)
Dropped out: none
All of our 2A top ten won this past week, but we've flipped two teams in the rankings. No. 2 Southwest Edgecombe leaps over No. 3 Tarboro after another impressive performance. The Cougars demolished a pretty good Beddingfield squad 52-22, while Tarboro struggled to put away 3-5 Greene Central. The Vikings can prove us wrong in two weeks when they travel to Southwest Edgecombe. No. 1 Reidsville won it's 41st straight game. No. 8 Northwood is giving up just six points per game.
Class 1A
1. Mt. Airy (7-0)
2. Albemarle (7-0)
3. SW Onslow (7-0)
4. East Surry (7-0)
5. Monroe (8-0)
6. Manteo (6-0)
7. Hendersonville (7-0)
8. Robbinsville (5-1)
9. Creswell (7-0)
10. Bishop McGuinness (6-1)
Dropped out: none
No. 10 McGuinness' 9-7 loss to No. 4 East Surry is not enough to knock the Villains from the top ten, so our 1A rankings remain the same. No. 8 Robbinsville avoids getting bumped from the rankings, holding on to edge Murphy 18-16. That was the only other close call in the 1A's. No. 1 Mt. Airy won it's 23rd straight game, beating North Stokes 54-0.
