The 2009 football season has been filled with some amazing games, fights that were being fought to the very last seconds, and tonight’s game between Oshkosh North and Appleton West can easily be added to that list.
Halfway through the second quarter Appleton North was down 28-7. Halfway through the third quarter they were still down 35-14. However, that is when things started to change and it started with a 24-yard scoring run by Foss. It continued with an 18-yard scoring run by Resop and it ended with an 8-yard scoring pass to Ben Becker. With Wettengel making all three extra points, Appleton West was able to tie up the game with 49 seconds to go.
Coming off of scoring 21 unanswered points in the final third of the game, Appleton West had the momentum to get in the end zone in only two plays; however, these points would not go unanswered. Oshkosh North got in the end zone as well with a 15-yard pass to Evan Butts, his first touchdown of the season. Rather than Oshkosh North playing it safe with an extra point, their quarterback, Taylor Cameron ran it in for 2 points. This was exactly what Oshkosh North needed to do to win the game. With Appleton West unable to score again, Oshkosh North won 43-42.
"That's how you build a foundation and a tradition. You've got to step on our throats to beat us. To their credit, they did, but our kids just keep fighting. They're playing like Appleton West. It's a very tough loss to take but I am so proud to be their coach." -- Appleton West’s coach Brent Engen
